Innovation: Design a Competent Structure that supports your Compelling Disruptive Strategy.

As you plan to end run the prevailing industry practice with either

  1. a change in the product/service for the same need (Beautifully articulated: Startups don’t compete with airlines by purchasing a bunch of planes, ….(they) compete …..by inventing videoconferencing) or,
  2. developing an emerging niche strategy that the market leader is ignoring as they produce established products for mainstream customers in major markets.

you must design a new structure that supports your new strategy. At the early stage Structure always follows Strategy.

It is likely to be quite a departure from the established industry practice. Copying a structure, one you have become familiar with from your past, will play into the very hands of the establishment.

Looking at your industry for clues of the new structure is futile. Look outside to other organizations, who have been able to execute a similar niche strategy as yours, for clues to a possible “radical” structure.
