I have been studying business principles that can be learnt from Nature ( see https://medium.com/@rajivtandon/learn-from-nature-time-to-be-wasteful-63065fd3f8e7) and the principle resonates, especially your conclusion “whatever you end up with, whether you pay attention to design or not, is your design.”
