Building the elements of On-boarding , while still in College is a very efficient method of developing skilled personnel. It saves time and money and reduces duplication efforts. This concept applies not only to the IT industry but any industry going through trained manpower shortage.

I hope Universities will get out of their self limiting role of imparting content and consider their broader role of developing productive citizens. I have made this comment in many fora to the chagrin of my educator colleagues.

In my previous life we had developed a demonstrative program called “Work Skills Program” that was instituted at several Universities, including Allahabad U. that offered basic employable skills in addition to their regular coursework. The program made students who were taking dead end courses into productive employable personnel and brought many employers, who had never visited the campus to the recruitment center.

I hope as we put more attention to skill development in India we don’t ignore the role of Universities in developing market ready graduates. I know from personal experience that the brass at Universities will have to be brought in kicking and screaming.
